changing plans

September 9, 2015

when I calculated the warp for toss cushions, woven in honeycomb on a crackle threading

the plan was to use rags for the heavy weft yarn

it didn’t work and I switched to 8/8 cotton

but then the 20 epi didn’t work and I had to re-sley the reed to 24 epi

that changed the width on the loom

P1070557

instead of 15 inches the woven width was 12.75

after washing it became 12 inches

there is considerable take-up with this weave structure and heavier weft yarns

P1070551because the cushions will now be smaller

there was enough warp to weave a third cushion

the weft in the cells is hand spun cotton in natural colours

two very fine yarns were plied to get the correct weight

P1070558when washed the heavy, outline weft relaxed and surrounded the cells

P1070559fabric for the first two cushions was woven to compliment rag/sakiori cushions woven earlier in the year

I’ve been seriously attempting to reduce “the stash” for several years

it never seems to go down

P1070554this is one of the reasons why

again, I’ve inherited another weaver’s stash

some lovely linen, cottolin, mercerized cotton and a box of good quality unbleached cotton

the box in the corner contains orphan yarns that will hopefully find a new home

the next project needs some planning

Alice – rotating 5 colours in the weft made it interesting but slow. Inspired by Susan Wilson’s “Weave Classic Crackle and More”.

I really like the effect of that honeycomb pattern! And the colors! I like it all!

Kerry – it is 4 shaft/harness, makes a thick fabric with little drape and is slow to weave but you don’t need to change colours all the time.

My fabric stash is the same. No matter what I do it seems to get bigger and bigger. I haven’t bought fabric for ages but still have no more room on my shelves.
