weaving a tradition

July 12, 2011

the huck lace towels are off the loom, washed and pressed. The hems need to be hand stitched.

the huck patterns change, in some cases quite dramatically, after washing. They are different on either side, warp floats on one side and weft floats on the other.

from right to left you can see the difference.

on the same linen warp I wove the shifu thread made from my calligraphy practice paper.

the shifu thread was woven on the linen warp one pick (thread) of paper alternating with one linen thread. The finished piece measures 16 1/4″ X 29″ and used a full sheet, 24 1/2″ X 37″ of Japanese paper.

My secrets are safe.

I’m in awe with your weaving. I don’t know how to weave, but would love to one day. Are you going to dye them? Shifu thread looks great too – xoxo Nat

All the pieces are beautiful, but the shifu piece is astonishing -so smooth and even. I am even more inspired to try working with shifu.
