this sashiko pattern was a pleasure to stitch
it is called Shippo-Tsunagi or linked flower crests
the stitching is done in lengthwise chains
working rhythmically, back and forth, from right to left
not in circles as one might expect and the stitching goes quite quickly
the weavers are back to work
inside and out
inlay on plain weave
it is going more quickly than I expected
the warp is all handspun
2 ply silk and camel with a contrasting thread of 2 ply quivet and 120/2 silk
(still working on the stash!)
the inlay is also handspun silk
very fine, so as not to distort the fabric
production weaving is not my “thing”
I love getting my fingers in the threads
and constantly thinking what comes next
while pruning the grape-vine I left a pile of leaves in the sun for a couple of days
fantastic colour scheme – would make a wonderful warm, wooly blanket
and a lucky find at the secondhand shop
two lacquerware sake cups, never used, still in their original boxes
few people here understand the craft and think it is plastic
the selling price is ridiculous

Such a lot of loveliness! The inlay work is gorgeous and so is the sashiko–the bits of applique (?) really add a lot!

Velma – the inlay is going to take some time – 2 scarves! Unfortunately the junk stores are mainly full of junk, seems to be what people are looking for.

i come away from garage sales with old cotton sheets, napkins, curtains, and maybe a leather bag or funky office supplies… my treasure! but you’re right, so much junk. best if it gets used, though. better if it hadn’t been manufactured in the first place.

I loved everything in this post! I also enjoy stitching that sashiko pattern. You used your beautiful handspun silk in such a wonderful way. I must try the inlay…I’ve wanted to for a while now. So lucky the lacquer find, they are gorgeous! I’m a little jealous 😉

Kristin – I’m going to do the sashiko pattern again, it really pleased me. The inlay is pleasing also. I almost left the sake cups but the price was so low – $6 for the 2 that I couldn’t leave them. Hope you are having a good summer.
