6 yards of 4 inch wide binding
takes almost as long to weave as something 24 inches wide
there are the same number of weft shots
it will be hand stitched with red thread
the log cabin pattern worked up nicely
this January piece is stitched on a very closely woven cotton napkin
backed by old sheeting
it has proven difficult to stitch
the white on white kantha stitching makes a textured border
finding my way in a new year with many unforseen questions
was a fortuitous start
I never make resolutions or choose a single word/idea to see me through the year
new opportunities generally present themselves
and an unexpected surprise just came my way
Bryan at Japanese Textile Workshops is starting a new, 2 week workshop, in April
you guessed it – I’m going
it’s crazy, the Canadian dollar is crashing
but I’m getting too old to wait for the world to sort itself out
if I have to live on rice and potatoes for the remainder of my years
so be it!
Thank you for turning me on to Bryan’s workshops. I learned so much and I hope to go back for more traveling in Japan. Will you be doing the Firecoats he spoke about? Sounds fascinating! Have a wonderful time!

Tobie (are you Tobie?) – I took Bryan’s first international workshop 4 years ago in April. They have changed since then, he now mails a homework package which I haven’t received so don’t know exactly what to expect. Yes, we will be making haori (jackets) and I expect some surprises. I’ll share on the blog but probably not until I’m home.

I got an email from him describing the haori. Please post photos, etc when you return and have a wonderful trip. I loved my experience at Bryan’s and Japan in general and hope to travel there again someday.

Go for it. A wiser woman than I once told me that you can’t wait while you are living. That is what living is about.
Look forward to your pictures and posts all about it.

Velma – I had some idea you were stopping at Fujino on your way back but didn’t know exactly when that was. Maybe the hooligans will all turn into saints while you are away!

Woohoo!! What a great choice you’ve made to take advantage of this opportunity! It would be so easy to find all the reasons not to go–I love that you’re diving in! The January stitching is fascinating to see.

Louisa – I’ll take hundreds of pictures – again. Last time I put together a DVD for the Victoria guild and then a different one for the Deep Cove (Van.Is.) guild so maybe I can share that somehow. Starting to panic – and make gifts to take.

Lis – Bryan and I have been working on the details of him coming to Victoria in June 2017 to teach at the guild’s 5 day conference at the University of Victoria. But this came as a big surprise, at first I thought “no way” but I’m not getting any younger and 10 hour flights are not something I will be doing much longer. Getting excited already, I’ll take LOTS of pictures.
