connecting threads

September 7, 2013

Terry Jarrard-Dimond has created an interesting site named The Thread Nest

featuring the collections of many different fibre artists

this is mine and not all of it!

daughter-in-law Kathy, her grandmother Betty Kinnis, Kathy’s daughter Carrie

Grandma Kinnis was President of the Victoria Handweavers’ and Spinners’ Guild in 1955-57

at 97 years young she still weaves

I was President in 2002-04 and again in 2006-07

Carrie’s turn next

if we could teach Kathy to weave there would be 4 generations of us

the leaf is for Velma

the latest warp has had its problems and took longer to thread than I’d anticipated

it’s for a challenge with my students’ “tea and tell” group so a secret

weaving-finishing 319

there was a mistake in the pattern which I didn’t notice until I started threading

the solution was to add one warp thread to each colour block/stripe

the problem I’ve had in the past is that individual threads swing around and get in a tangle

this is not my brilliant solution

Susan Harvey pictured it on her blog Thrums

thank you, Susan, what a neat idea.

Maybe one day when I have more time, I might pick it up weaving. That being said, I grew up spending lots of time as a child in my grandmother’s weaving room. It was a magical place and I was always allowed to play with all her special threads, some that were her mother’s.

Kathy – you can’t wish weaving on someone else, it’s something they have to want to do for themselves. It needs time, equipment and space and takes longer to become proficient than most other fibre crafts. It’s not for everyone.

yup, that is one brilliant idea from susan. don’t know how many times it has saved a warp.

Neki – I’ve always added extra warp threads but hadn’t figured out the separating bar – it eliminates the tangles.

Velma – strange how the jet buttons keep appearing – and they are affordable.
Kerry – it is an occasion when 4 generations get together

So neat to see all those women together, getting ready to work on beautiful things!

It’s so nice to see that something I’ve shared is useful and others are trying it out!

What a great family you have…. I often wish some of my offspring were interested in weaving!
Adopt a daughter? That might work! 🙂

Susan – I’ll pass the hint on to my students – with credit to you. —or a son, Carrie’s dad has been photographed helping her – with her knitting, too
