seasonal ecotones
Having spent several years at sea on small boats it is comforting to hear the mournful sound of a foghorn while firmly planted on terra firma. Here, on the West Coast of Vancouver Island it foretells the coming of Fall. A seasonal ecotone, fog drifting down the Straits of Juan de Fuca.
the Strait was named after a Greek, not a Spanish explorer as many people assume.
he was likely accompanied by the bottlenose dolphin

another sign of the season, the figs are ripening and I have a bumper crop.
I am trying to get my share before the raccoons and starlings discover the feast.
it is impossible to eat them all and they don’t keep well so I’m making a few jars of jam.
a welcome treat in the dark days of winter.

I like to put some finely cut lemon zest in my figs jam, the zest adds a special flavour. How interesting to read about Ioannis Fokas, I never heard his name before. It is amazing how much I can learn by reading your blogs.

The figs are giving you great crops Jean. I love fig, it’s must be a Greek in me haha (I married a Greek). Yeas ago I asked my aunt-in-law for a fig jam recipe, but she refused to give it to me. Sadly to say she took it to heaven with her! Tell me more about your time at sea. Fascinating I’m sure. I came from family of sea merchant. My father owned a Chinese junk boat and my family lived on it until I was born. One of the member of the tour Cynthia was sailing at sea for a few years. You two will have a lot to talk about.
