it’s Distaff Day
happy hours and days to all fibre fanatics around the world
Rosie decided it was a good time to learn to spin
it looks easy when teacher does it
spinning hemp on a Jenkin’s kuchulu Turkish spindle
behind is a 4.9K bump of hemp – don’t think that will all be spun any time soon
a new year’s challenge from Ann Wood – https://annwoodhandmade.com
another 100 day scrappy book to stitch
the one I did last year with a pile of scraps waiting to start this year on January 20th – maybe!
trying to decide if I want to make the commitment again – anyone want to join me??
In A Little Book of Japanese Contentments Erin Niimi Longhurst writes about the concept of ikigai ( ee-key-ga-ee) or purpose
” ikigai” is that thing in our lives that provides a delicious richness- it’s what gives life its raison d’etre. There is a fire within us all; it may burn brighter in some than in others and it may waver but it can also return stronger, hotter and more powerful than ever and it takes different things to stoke the flames for each of us.
it’s a good thought for a new year
What will you use the spun hemp for? I don’t think you have mentioned spinning it before but maybe it is perfect for a beginner like Rosie? I shall look forward to seeing your book.

Sue – when spun finely hemp is very much like flax/linen but not prepared as nicely, it can be very wearing on equipment and takes extra prep/time to dye and it is definitely not for the beginner. It is the only fibre I had for Rosie to try. In the past I have completed two of those hemp bumps, don’t think this last one will ever get finished.

With you to teach her I am sure Rosie will become a very competent spinner and with 2 of you working who knows how much will get done?

Sue – don’t think Rosie is very interested when it doesn’t involve food and parties.

I am useless at challenges! The Radnor Forest Hug is giving me that certain collective stare, the one that says, well at least do SOMETHING creative…..like making sweaters for cold bears, for instance?!
I love your challenge book from last year and will be cheering you on if you go ahead with the one for this year 😊.

tumblesmum – the bears would love new sweaters – don’t even suggest it.

That’s a lot of hemp! Good luck to the ursine and human spinners, and happy Distaff Day! Also thanks for mentioning the idea of ikigai, and the fact that it might not always burn at the same intensity…

Kjerstin – I did spin an entire one of those hemp bumps several years ago but think this one may be passed on. It is really can be damaging on the spinning wheel and not fun on a spindle.
