black and white

April 6, 2021

and shades of grey

after stitching white last month obviously black was next

fabric choices are new cottons used to line a kimono , old kimono silk and very old kasuri (ikat)

black also has many shades but it needed a second colour to really stand out

the other side is a grey scale I wove years ago with sewing thread

now that I can take the tapestry loom outside and weave in the sunshine (still a bit cool!)

the tapestry is progressing slowly

I’m using a photograph as inspiration for the center piece

warping the “fringeless” technique creates doubled warp threads

sett at 10 epi (ends per inch) and then splitting the warp in the center and weaving at 20 epi

which is challenging, very slow and requires fine yarns – all handspun and natural dyes

a bit of April foolishness!

happy Spring

I too have enough supplies of one kind or another – to keep me going for yonks. I don’t have anywhere much outside that’s nice to sit but I do have a long bank of windows in my living room where I do most of my artmaking. So it feels like I’m outside… in a few months, I’ll have the heat pump running and the windows will not be open for long each day…

Love your tapestry which might be slow but I’m sure you can see you’ve accomplished some each day…

Catherine – we are having typical Spring weather with days alternating between warm and sunny then cold, wet and windy. Just finished and sent my income tax which has been taking time, so good to have it done.

Being able to sit outside (as opposed to just do work that keeps me warm) is such a delight! At present I find myself happy to do things which are slow and fiddly since I am going out very little and have only small amounts of materials left.

Sue – I have enough supplies to recycle to last me a few more years – just not what I want to make/do but it forces me to think outside the box and be creative. Of course I can always order online but the postage is expensive and some things I want to see/feel.

I have just ordered some paint online to redecorate a shabby room but I am concerned I will not like the colour if the reproduction on the website is not accurate. I wanted to go and look at the tins, hold shade cards side by side but it is not possible at the moment.

Sue – hard to choose colours on a computer screen. Hope it is good.

Kjerstin – it is wonderful for lightening the spirits BUT I’ve been inside most of the day doing my taxes.
