drifting along

September 3, 2020

I didn’t have to go far to find fibre to spin

a visit to Knotty by Nature, a talk with Ryan and

a blend of Merino wool, alpaca and silk, it’s so-o soft

plus a braid of Corriedale wool to spin on my favorite, rim weighted Turkish spindle

it won’t last long – I seem to be sitting in the sun spinning the days away

I have been doing more stitching and dyeing

scraps of linen from the fabric book project

the circle piece was meant to be a patch on my favorite (only) pair of jeans

but it is too bright and new looking

I wanted to try the squares again and see how to get a better dye in the open spaces

on the left is the book page where the pattern looks softer and faded

the white squares are stitched, gathered tightly and then capped with plastic wrap

the blue squares get really scrunched up, the dye doesn’t reach into them unless you really squeeze it when in the vat

to be honest, I prefer the soft, faded look

finally, the tapestry loom is warped and weaving started

it is the small leaded window in my front door

looking out on the world as it is today

I’ve been struggling with a design for weeks – so I’m just going with whatever comes

who knows – it might be the mailman!

I love seeing your dye results. They are so labour intensive and intricate. I am a ‘broad brush’ person most of the time but I also love tiny intricate detailed things – just find it hard to do them! Sitting in the sun spinning sounds fabulous – enjoy!

Sue – have to soak up as much sun as possible, the rainy, grey days will be here soon enough.

Sue – not looking forward to the grey days of winter. Suddenly we can feel the change of seasons, still warm and sunny but much cooler at night.

Sue – it came too soon. We are currently experiencing a very smokey atmosphere with air quality poor and a strong smell of smoke even in the house with all windows shut, due to fires raging in southern U.S.

That sounds very unpleasant! I am not sure if it is a normal event or another indication of climate change but I hope it all clears soon.

Sue – I’m staying inside as much as possible, with no sun getting through the temperature has dropped and the fog horn is blowing. It would seem we have a few more days if the wind doesn’t change. The fires are caused by long, hot, dry summers – due to climate change – Donald Trump blames it on forest management and on state governments. Believe what you want!!
