a very small boro
May 23, 2019
finished
it was harder to weave rags than I had anticipated
with all the ends trimmed, washed and steamed pressed
it is my largest piece so far – 6.5″ x 8.5″ (16.5cm. x 21.6 cm.)
it is a little disconcerting to see all the vertical slits (left unstitched) when held up to the light
but it actually feels very firm and stable
Kirsten Glasbrook’s tapestries fascinate and inspire me
http://www.kirstenglasbrook.com
she creates small tapestries within larger pieces
and surrounds them with all manner of interesting borders
a small corner taken from her book
I’m going to be working on borders
if I lived in Japan I’d be collecting fabrics to stitch a full size boro kimono
meanwhile the backstrap and tapestry looms need to be warped

Lisa – thank you – for all the kind words. I’m new at tapestry and the most difficult part for me is design, there are definite constraints involved in the technique and I have to keep reminding myself to simplify, simplify.

This is my favorite so far! And so “you.” Glasbrook’s work is amazing–the details and the use of color and symbolism–wow!

Kerry – it’s my favorite too, I’m working on how to frame it. Glasbrook’s colours are stunning.

Kjerstin – it took almost as long to make as a full sized one would! And the question is??

It’s just beautiful!
I have a bag of kimono scraps, but I’m pretty sure they’re all silk, and I think you’ve probably got cotton in mind for your boro. If not, let me know, you’re welcome to have them. They’re mixed, from men’s and women’s kimonos, judging by the designs.

Kate – thank you so much but yes, it is blue and white cotton I have in mind. Maybe, if I go to Japan again anytime soon – it would take a good long time to stitch.
