I’m singing

March 25, 2017

the sun is shining

the birds are singing

the neighborhood is waking up

the old Japanese plum is celebrating

and my students brought me pink tulips

Spring is in the air

the hanten is finished

I still can’t believe there was exactly enough fabric

to match the “summer and winter” pattern on the back seam

only a handful of scraps left

the woven shibori is linen, the “summer and winter” is cotton and a cotton/hemp blend

dyed with natural indigo and madder

the star shibori will have to wait for another project

there was enough of this striped shibori to use on the back and fronts

with an indigo dyed piece of damask tablecloth to make up the length

there was even enough of the collar shibori

to make cuffs – with a little patching

and that handful of scraps?

they will become a pocket on the inside

finished before the deadline!

This is so beautiful, I can see myself wearing it! I hope I had one of our amazing hantens.

Blandina – happy to hear from you, thank you. I’ll have to get a picture of me wearing it – after the fashion show.

Lis – and to you, Lis. I remember my Springs in England, love the feeling of renewed life and vitality.

Your hanten is gorgeous! Wear it with pride, Jean. My poor forsythia doesn’t have nearly as many flowers thanks to the birds who use it as a salad bar while they wait for their turn at the feeder. Brats!

Louisa – thank you. I’ve never seen the birds snacking on my forsythia but they dine on the Japanese plum blossoms with gusto!

You sound so happy–and you should be! The hanten is gorgeous–the colors!–and spring has sprung!

Kerry – has Spring arrived at your place? It seems there are new blossoms every day now and the birds are singing their little hearts out. It renews my energy and enthusiasm.

Your hanten is beautiful and so is the forsythia. I haven’t seen it in such a long time. Our winters are not cold enough. I grew up back east and in the middle of February my mom would bring branches inside to force bloom. It was such a nice reminder that winter wouldn’t last forever!

Tobie – the forsythia is beautiful this year but a little late blooming, I love it for the promise of Spring.

That is incredible. A real show-stopper.

Jean-Pierre – it is a little brighter than most of my clothing, will have to be brave to wear it!

that is truly something to sing about! love when you have just enough to make the perfect project.

Aimee – and it is so nice not to have a bunch of smaller pieces to put back in the stash.

this is a conversation that both of you continue, using up small bits and making beautiful clothing.

Velma – after so many years I have boxes of scraps and continue creating more.

The hanten that was meant to be! I am not surprised there was exactly enough fabric to match the seams – serendipity! What a beautiful garment!

    • March 25, 2017 5:07 pm

Heather – when serendipity happens it is worth singing about and it happens so seldom it is truly worth celebrating.

The hanten looks amazing. So many pieces of your work. Am certain it will be the talk of the town at the conference

Judi – thank you and thanks to sensei’s measurements it fits nicely, it will get lots of wear.
