snow day

December 18, 2016

surprise – yesterday we woke up to snow

p1110016

I got up early to thaw out the hummingbird feeder

poppa hummer was waiting for me

p1110011the chickadees were waiting impatiently

p1110007a large, healthy squirrel spent the day dining on sunflower seeds

although our weather is never as severe as other parts of Canada

our critters are not prepared for extended cold periods

p1110019baking helps keep the house warm

white chocolate, ginger cookies

and double chocolate, banana fruit loaf

it wouldn’t be Christmas without the special baking

p1110013cutting shifu between cookie batches

p1110018slowly working on the wool/silk hanten

I struggled with whether to hand or machine stitch

because it is woven fabric I finished all the cut edges on the serger

but all the rest is hand stitched

P.S. – if you want to see some real winter and avoid the tired old reruns on T.V.

I made ginger cookies, too–I think they’re my favorites and the house smells so good. I dipped mine in dark chocolate. Very kind of you to feed the squirrels so very well!

i can smell the baking and love the hanten progress, but mostly love seeing those lovely strips, every one cut by hand. i looked up the knife, but couldn’t find it…maybe i’ll try again.

Velma – I googled the knife and found it, works really well. Think I have a pair of hummers, “he” doesn’t let the female near the feeder very often.

Kristin – it was a very big squirrel but the birds kept chasing him away, haven’t seen him today. Need to get the hanten finished before it is Spring.

I think warmer weather is on the way. Yesterday morning it was -27C for us and now it is currently zero! Better weather patterns coming up 🙂 .

I just checked the Gulf Islands weather and noticed a snowfall warning was in effect, followed by a week of rain. We head out that way on Boxing Day so I am watching the weather in hopes of kayaking next week.

Cookies are happening in the Hitty cupboard too! Probably a good plan to stabilise the edges of your Hanten.

Kjerstin – the Hittys bake the most wonderful goodies. Love the smell in the kitchen, my Mom loved to bake and it is what I remember of her at Christmas.
