fibre

March 27, 2015

it has been a busy month

but my very old T.V. is acting up and it is amazing how much a person can accomplish

P1060605a month’s worth of spinning

cotton I’m planning for the next weft

Romney dyed purple/black – it is so dark that it has been difficult to spin at night

on my favorite Turkish spindle some very nice cotton

and 12 oz. of soft 2 ply wool that I almost buried in the compost pile

P1060599three 2 1/2 pound cones of wool

passed on by a guild member

this is VERY fine, maybe 60/2 – I’d need two lifetimes to weave it all

and it has some moth damage which could cause a “little” problem

P1060601

so here is the plan – a challenge to my students

using at least one colour and hopefully two or all three

choosing your own weave structure, weave something??

and make samples for everyone who chooses to participate

P1060600a new (to me) fibre magazine PLY

(with samples of the wool)

this is the fourth issue and focuses on silk

it has good, in-depth articles well written and researched

P1060604I’ll be looking for future issues

P1060606threading the loom is progressing – slowly

P1060607and the studio tour is approaching quickly – too quickly

meanwhile the bugs are busy

P1060609 the garden is calling

P1060612and everything is growing

P1060613

I have cotton hand cards, punis and some cotton I dyed when dyeing some lace for a friend. But have I done anything with it? No. Seeing your use of the Turkish spindle inspires me to spin with mine. I want weave it on my ridged heddle loom.

Betsy – cotton isn’t as easy to spin as some of the other fibres but I really enjoy it and LOVE my IST Crafts spindle.Time to get on with it, have fun.

    60/2?! That’s so fine! I can’t imagine working with that–maybe someday. I love seeing your garden photos–they give me hope . . .

Kerry – 60/2 just takes longer! Can’t imagine surviving all the ice and snow you have had, yikes!

We just got back from a week in Florida–that helped! But it was hard to come back . . .

I love PLY magazine! My guild has a subscription so I can read it from their library. The themes are great – I just finished the “worsted” issue.

Don’t you just hate those darn m*ths! I have my own issues with the critters right now.

Louisa – I’m going to take the Ply mag. to the next guild meeting and see if they will subscribe. The wool came to me straight out of the deep freezer so I’m hoping no beasties came with it.

The magazine looks interesting. I’ll have to check it out. I’m suppose to write an article for them for a 2016 issue all about cotton.

Kristin – can’t wait for that. What I really like is the focus on one fibre, that it is professional, the articles are written by people well known in their field and it reaches beyond the crafty and what can be created in a weekend. Hope they keep up the standard.
