heavy work

March 13, 2015

time for a lunch break

the community garden pick up is in a few days

I’ve been busy pruning and hacking down bushes

P1060532a branch came down and got me in the face – now I have a black eye!

this snowball shrub has grown into an out-of-control tree

(the forsythia behind it is next)

It is covered in lichen so I’ve been saving as much as I can

it’s a slow process

P1060540 can’t wait to fire up the dye pot

P1060546meanwhile the pile is growing

P1060541almost as big as my car!

by evening all I can do is spin

P1060549

the cotton is finished

P1060538

this wool is dirty but after  flick carding the tips and then hand carding

it is spinning up nicely

there isn’t much of it – think I got fed up and stuck it in a basket – years ago

now it’s back to the bushes.

jean, i think it’s grand that you can say your tree beat you up. were you barking up the wrong tree? i know, groan. but it is a great story! and beautiful spinning.

Velma – well done, love it! think that tree has been tamed. my neighbor came over with his sharp saw and finished the job and even took all the branches away in his truck. on to the next tree.

Oh, no! You fought the shrubs and the shrubs won! It doesn’t sound like it slowed you down much, though–what a lot you get done!

Hope your eye will go back to normal as soon as possible. Colorful eye -is it part of working natural colors? Looking forward to see the results of lichen dye. That wonderful handspun cotton will be dyed and woven into something?

Alfia – the cotton will be weft for hand towels, not sure I’ll dye it. The wool will be dyed.

Oh poor you! Beaten up by your own shrubs. Hope your eye feels better soon. And it’ll be fun to see what colours you get from the lichens you saved!

Louisa – the lichens will most likely give golds/bronze/brassy colours – the eye will be much more colourful.
