my first amulet is finished – powerful protection or just plain fun?

P1060351quoting Sheila Paine in Amulets –  Sacred Charms of Power and Protection

“amulets protect us from witches, hobglobins and the little folk, from evil spirits that dwell in dark woods, at crossroads or in water, and, in particular, from the evil eye.”

whether you believe in such things or not making amulets is fun

P1060352handwoven fabric, warp and weft yarns are painted with chemical dyes

shi sha mirrors for reflection, scissors for something sharp

mother-of-pearl buttons

a bell to make noise

blue beads – the colour blue is important, more so if it is indigo

red is also a good colour, tassels add to the confusion

the “blue eye” is something I made in a glass workshop

a very powerful protection

I stitched a twisted cord around the outside

inside is a secret message, written on Velma’s handmade paper

what comes next?

When I saw the title amulets I wasn’t expecting this! Oh how beautiful and so very thought provoking. It reminds me of the God’s Eyes we used to make in camp but definitely kicked up a notch.

The diamond shape communicates power, unlike the static square. Interesting how that little shift makes such a difference. These are great!

Alice – you are so right, it is the subtle changes that can make the difference between ordinary and good work.

The amulets are great Jean. I’d like to have a go at some of these myself. I think they would make lovely gifts. As usual you have the colours arranged beautifully.

Myra – you are right, they would make nice gifts. I’d love to see some you make.

Heather – great fun sitting by the fire.

Fabulous! Little projects like this are a great mid-winter pick-me-up, aren’t they?
