weaving wanderings

weaving tea towels for the Studio Tour on April 26-27th

P1040681I frequently weave tea towels instead of samples when trying out a new weave structure

my Fiberworks PCW is not working on the new computer yet so I just rushed on

bad idea, I added extra threads on the edges to make a nice selvedge – but – it creates a long weft skip on the back

guess this towel is mine, when it is finished I’ll cut off and correct the mistake

P1040680the warp is two shades of natural linen, it almost has a pleated look which is just a trick of the colour change

weft is blue and green 2 ply hemp with linen tabby thread

I choose this pattern because the colour is in the weft so each towel can be different

I’ve also done something strange to the camera and the pictures are compressed – yikes!!

o.k. – managed to fix that problem

P1040684Velma’s paper, on the back of each signature cover, has been folded and stitched to make pockets for all the bits of paper I seem to accumulate

I’ve also added pages of velum, graph paper and “Arches, text wave” which can be used with water-colour pencils and a light wash

P1040685I bought these mother-of-pearl buttons for the seven tiny ones in the middle, still stitched to a scrap of the original card

maybe I’ll make my version of a button blanket?

the book is  Robes of Power – Totem Poles on Cloth  by Doreen Jensen and Polly Sargent

now, enough of the electronics

I’m off to start my income tax – then there will be hysterics.

Funny how we let the “not quite good enough” items go to our own personal use. It should really be the other way around, we should keep the best for ourselves, we deserve it. But so it is.

Alice – maybe we are one of the last generations to view the world that way. The good china only came out for high days and holidays!

I’m very happy to let the man of the house do the taxes. I’m allergic to finances! This is the second year after retirement and he discovered that he has to pay but I get some back so it almost works out evenly.

Have you contacted Bob about PCW? I think you need the latest upgrade to work on Win 8.1. (Just another reason why I’m not switching until I must!) Phooey on computers!

Louisa – well, as there is no man in my house I’ll just have to get on with it. I read the PCW info on your blog- first I had heard/thought about it but something I’m putting off while I get other things sorted out. thanks for the tip.

i remember the thing i disliked about pattern weaving–working out the squirrels–and the computer is a perfect tool for that. i love the tiny x’s on my paper! grin.

Velma – I’d rather work out the squirrels in pattern weaving than in computers.I remember being taught to cross stitch as a child and having to make the wrong side all straight stitches in rows – I still do that! more satisfying than pattern weaving or computers.
