more lessons to learn
I dyed the silk skeins individually, with rhubarb leaves, as it was spun
each skein was a slightly different shade
so – I mordanted them together in alum
then dyed them again in the last of the leaves
voila – the same colour
I thought it would be a good colour with the blue silk warp
but it looked dreadful – so out it came.
instead, I’m using a hand-spun 2 ply silk that was “painted”, before spinning, with Procion MX dyes
there are 2 narrow pattern blocks on each selvedge
and I miss-counted when winding the warp, I could have dropped 1 block on each side
but- I’m stubborn!
here is the solution
a bell on each end might be interesting?
meanwhile I’ve been knitting in the heat
from the stash – Merino, silk, silk/cashmere blend, silk/camel blend and alpaca

I really like your rhubarb dyeing results and the handspun shawl is lovely. I take it that one is natural colours.

Cathy – thanks, the Merino was spun from a blend of commercially dyed fibre and the 2 ply silk I dyed with Procion MX dyes. They both look natural and are almost identical in colours. the rest of the yarns are all natural.

color in yarn/weaving with all the added dimensionality, etc, can often be “educational” shall we say. glad you had that lovely procion dyed stuff to make it ok.

Velma – yup! no matter how much you use colour every once in awhile it can really fool you.

Wow, I love that shawl. Any possibility you might be willing to share the pattern? I have a stash of handspun laceweight similar to what you have used.

Heather – it’s not really a pattern I just made it up as I got going. ‘ll give it some thought, write it down and send it to you. It took more yarn than I expected and is more a scarf than a shawl. It starts with 3 stitches at the center top and you just keep adding stitches on a circular needle. There was ALOT of stitches by the end.

I agree the handspun silk painted yarn is much nicer with this warp. Happy Weaving!
