keeping busy
January 14, 2013
the weather is grey and wet and dreary, it’s hard to get inspired
finishing things – which is a very good thing
the end of the last silk scarf warp, perfect for another shifuku
lined with a piece of silk shibori, dyed about 2 years ago
some things just wait patiently until they are a perfect match
preparing the lokta paper that Velma sent me
I have always measured both the top and bottom of the folded paper before cutting
it takes a long time so this time I “eyeballed” it, at approximately .3mm it worked perfectly
this paper is tough it worked up beautifully without a single break
you can see how fine the shifu yarn is compared to the sewing thread

Looking good Jean. I have half a dozen half bags without the cords attached. It is minus ten outside these nights. Now or never!

Bryan – if it is minus 10 outside what is it inside?? I love the bags but there isn’t much interest in them here. Can you sell yours in the shop? Stay warm.

I love the way the fabrics and kumihimo braids go together. What do YOU keep in a shifuku? And the lokta! What is it about paper thread?!

Kristin – good question, a Japanese tea bowl in one, a beautiful little incense container in another, jewelery in a very small one. Paper thread – well it is all about handmade paper, you have to love it and understand that it is not like the pulp paper we use in the western world – there is an ancient magic to it!

You will have to teach me how to attach the braid to the shifuku, mine from Fujino are still unfinished. Please!

Blandina – I think I missed that lesson and so am copying from a bag a friend made. Not sure it is correct. I will make a drawing and send to you.

SO glad the lokta is working out. there is (as you might suspect) a bit of inconsistency in the lokta…some of it is so full of crud that it’s impossible to make the “chinese lantern” and others have “holes” throughout. i hoped i picked good stuff for you!

Velma – I cut 2 more sheets last night and they were perfect – good picking. Thank you, I’m enjoying it.
