too much thinking

December 29, 2012

time to warp the loom and prepare for a new year

but…what to weave? what fibre, weight, pattern? to dye or not to dye?

why weave at all??

this will be another year to reduce  “the stash”…it seems endless

Japan 2012 113

when in Japan, Bryan introduced a shibori technique that I found interesting

Japan 2012 369

using a machine knitted cotton tube, Lis and Janine stitched resist threads

Japan 2012 373

slipped it over a PVC pipe and tightened the threads

Japan 2012 383

dyed it in the indigo vat and then removed the resist threads

so-o, after too much thinking I’m going to weave in the resist threads

and try it on a 40/2  linen warp with 20/1 linen for the weft

shibori 118

I’ve enjoyed woven shibori in the past and am looking forward to seeing how this works

shifu 065

more shifu, I’ve already spent my 2013 yarn budget on 6 sheets of kiraku kozo

  ready to cut and spin

it should keep me out of trouble for a little while

Neki – oh yes, I also have a small book she self-published before that one and was lucky enough to attend a workshop she taught in Vancouver.

Ha ha, that’s a pretty bad photo of me – all those late nights learning, stitiching and steaming at the onsen! Looking forward to seeing what your shibori turns out like. Happy New Year Jean x

Stash reduction has a bad rap, unfairly so. I think it leads to good things, and in your case definitely. Carry on!

The shibori technique looks fabulous. It is definitely on my “to try” list.

Deb – the technique worked well on tubular knit but not so sure about a woven piece
Lis – I know the picture isn’t very flattering but it was the only one showing the stitching. Happy, healthy New Year to you and Al
Alice – actually I’m enjoying the stash reduction.
