plaited twill and bojagi
November 13, 2012
this was one of those troublesome warps that took twice as long as expected to get onto the loom
an eleven shaft plaited twill, only one weft, it should weave quickly
the first weft is the Indian silk in natural light grey
it is more like a very fine ribbon, I wanted to see how it would weave
it twists in the open shed but doesn’t seem to be a problem, I’m using a very light beat
I stitched one of the dyed sample squares into the bojagi
the yarn is much softer after washing
the shibori bojagi scarf is getting longer, one tiny stitch at a time

Lovely pattern, would you be able to share it?

Kate – it is at http://www.handweaving.net you need to fill in the pattern # 44603 on the top right of the page. To get a drawdown you need to join but that is free. Hope it works.

Eleven shaft twill….it is gorgeous. I hope you have a piece of it around when I come and visit next October,

Bryan – I like this one,it can be very subtle and traditional or just a little crazy. There is an equally interesting plaited twill on 4 harnesses if you are ever tempted. oops, it’s 8 harnesses – it’s been a long since I wove that pattern, I should have known it couldn’t be 4.

Simply gorgeous. All of it! My sympathies on the warp – it is not the time of year for fine black thread, is it? But it certainly looks like its behaving for you.

Heather – black thread, winter light and old eyes are not a good combination. that scarf is finished – on to #2.

the plaited twill is a new structure to me and i just love it! makes me want to have more harnesses (though i probably still wouldn’t use them!) but it is really nifty. so’s the scarf.

Velma – I rarely use all of my harnesses, it is heavy work lifting them all. I’ve had the pattern for ages but this is the first time weaving it.

the scarf looks lovely jean! the colors are really paired well, and are interesting against the pattern areas. an 11 harness twill, can’t say that i have ever tried more than 4 harnesses, what a feat! it should wash up nicely, i would think. the contrast is nice, what other colors were you thinking of working in?

Anastasia – an odd number of harnesses makes for strange pattern repeats, I have 16 but don’t use them all very often. not sure what colours come next – surprise!

Hi Myra, thank you. I thought maybe it was a bit severe, we’ll see what it looks like with a coloured weft

Very interesting twill…I haven’t seen it before. So much personality in the bojagi, a little bit of everything. And such lovely colors…are some of these from old kimono?

Your weaving is lovely, and I appreciate the difficulties because I have a daughter who weaves. There is nothing like hand-woven cloth in my mind. Your scarf is so rich with color and texture. I love the brown and black (or navy?) shibori in the background, too!

Ali – thank you, the shibori is brown, I bought it years ago only because the pattern is so beautiful, I’m happy to have found a way to use it.
Kristin – there are all kinds of kimono pieces in the bojagi – and other bits, too
