the master

June 26, 2012

one of the few magazines I still get on a regular basis is Kateigaho International

the English language version of an arts/culture/life magazine published in Japan

in the Summer 2007 issue, in an article on dyeing and weaving there are  2 pages featuring Hiroshi Noguchi.

He is a master in double-sided resist  dyeing called nagaita-chugatazome

he works with his son, Kaz  in the family home and workshop

stepping into the workshop is like a trip into the past,  made possible by Bryan’s many years of study and friendship with Noguchi-san

it is almost a spiritual experience

there many indigo vats

a separate shop where the kimono lengths are rolled out and the paste applied through the stencil

the paste has a dye added so the design can be seen on the white fabric

one stencil is moved along the length of the fabric – approximately 14 meters

it is left on the board when finished and placed in a rack in the courtyard to dry

after it is thoroughly dry it is dyed in indigo

Noguchi-san rinses it carefully and removes the paste

finished kimono lengths

thank you Judi for sharing  your pictures

more on this day at

Blandina’s , Lis’s or Bryan’s blogs

Thank you Noguchi-san.

Lis – I have my favorite book store order mine for me. It’s expensive, at one time I had it sent to a friend in Japan, she and her 2 daughters read it and then mailed it on. They used to publish 4 times a year but now only do a Spring and Fall issue. Make sure you get the International issue as there is a Japanese one as well – different content.

Great to see my photos being put to great use. Your posts are always filled with information I can use. It was such a shame that your camera went missing this particular day.
