hemp fibre, rustic yarn

December 28, 2011

the weather is grey – and green, wet and dreary

I’ve been sitting by the fire spinning hemp.

this is how I purchased Chinese hemp, called a “bump” this one weighs 4.9 kgs. That’s a lot of spinning!

I’ve spun hemp carded with wool, cotton and silk.

–singles, 2 ply and a 2 ply boucle that was woven into bath mitts.

I “wet spin”  hemp to produce a smooth, fine singles and often spin it on a wheel. This time I’m using a drop spindle to relax and enjoy the process.

hemp is a natural to dye with both indigo and kakishibu but it is difficult to achieve strong colour with other natural dyes, bleach damages the fibre.

It works well as both warp and weft  for weaving. I am planning a special project for this yarn.

I have a bump of hemp that’s been in the stash since the late nineties. Maybe 2012 is the year to get to it! Your samples are marvellous and inspiring.

Blandina – I love to spin, it’s like meditating – whenever I sit down so I don’t sit often.
Neki – we can talk about the type of yarn you like and how you want to use it, as you can see I have more hemp fibre than I’ll ever use, I’d be happy to spin you some.
Velma – the project will be revealed all in good time.
