silk and wool

June 11, 2011

I fell under the spell of this muga silk roving when I dropped into Knotty By Nature yesterday. It is stunningly beautiful, the colour of green-gold. I have read that the colour of muga silk intensifies with use/age.

the 2 ply sample works out at approximately 30 wraps per inch.  With 250 gms. it will take a while to spin and I will have enough to make something special.

the grape-vine is invading so I gave it a little pruning. The fresh new shoots and an alum mordant gave a soft buttery yellow to this merino roving. The same grape-vine, cut at the end of a hot summer gave a much stronger colour. Think I’ll top dye it with indigo.

it’s really not necessary to spin this, I could spend a lifetime fondling it. now-a-days it is mostly spinning fibres that get my heart racing. is that a sign of age-ing??
