black and white

June 9, 2011

white, where all the colours are blended and its opposite, black which is an absence of light have both held powerful symbolic meaning from ancient times.

handwoven scarves, Japanese shibori, kasuri and printing on silk and a rag weave jacket.

black evokes fear, death and evil but conversely is a sign of respect, sobriety and elegance.

white is a symbol of purity and chastity and the colour of mourning in Asia.

think of white linen and white lace on black velvet.what can be blacker than a crow’s feather?
