more dyeing

as well as dyeing the kitchen blue – I gathered some old, fallen eucalyptus leaves on my walk and wanted to see if they would dye anything after a winter of rain and snow. 

this is a salvaged piece of silk, a sleeve I think, that was originally a pale cream. I folded and clamped it between two copper coasters. The dried leaves were simmered for an hour, strained and the silk was simmered for another hour with alum added directly to the dye bath. It was left to cool overnight.

I’m surprised at the depth of colour from the dried out old leaves.

the painted silk/cotton roving spun up quickly . 

the colour blend is good and I’m looking at other handspun silks to use together in a scarf warp.
