painted paper

March 30, 2011

I wanted to try getting some colour into the shifu thread.

Painting the sheets of paper with Procion MX dye, the dye was set with a warm iron.

Two co-ordinating fabrics were woven using the shifu thread for the weft.  The warp in one fabric was a European hemp. It is a beautiful silver-grey, different from Chinese hemp due the retting process. The second warp was cotton and the hemp.

The close-up shows how different the shifu weft appears with the change in weaving structures.  Grey silk was pole wrapped and discharged, then pole wrapped again and dyed for the lining.

The ceramic button was a lucky find.

kozo paper from Japan, made specifically for shifu. The vest pattern is my design, one I have changed frequently to use handwoven fabric.
